It takes a particular kind of person to want to race off-road across high alpine passes. Especially when there is no prize at stake. The Silk Road Mountain Race is a single-stage 1670 kilometre cycle race following gravel, single and double track and old Soviet roads through the mountains of Kyrgyzstan. The closest thing to a prize is making the after party and the glory that comes with finishing. The late Mike Hall famously said, “Nothing that’s worth anything is ever easy,” a sentiment which the race organisers clearly stood proudly by for the inaugural edition of the event.
